Radio is changing! If you want to listen to your car radio whilst driving in the years to come, you are going to need to be able to receive a digital signal. This will affect all national FM, MW and AM signals and it is expected that the old analogue signal will disappear by 2015.
Television is already changing over to digital, with the Government starting the turn-off of the analogue TV signal back in 2009 and radio will be no different.
So what’s so great about DAB radio? Digital sound doesn’t pick up the white noise sound that ruins the quality of analogue sound, so DAB radios will sound as clear as a bell, unlike the old inferior radio broadcasts.
Finding a radio station will also be easier, with auto-tuning becoming standard, so it’s child’s play to find digital radio signals wherever you are. All you need to do is pick your chosen station from a list the radio shows you.
Another great plus for the DAB car radio is that digital channels carry more data, which means you will be able to view the artist playing for example.
There will be a wider selection of stations to choose, as stations like BBC 1Xtra and TalkSport transmit only in digital.

So how can you get the digital signal? There are a few different ways to go digital. For example, you can simply buy and fit a new DAB car radio in place of your old analogue one. Of course you will require a new external aerial to pick up the DAB signal.
Alternatively you could get an additional box for your analogue system (FM/AM/MW) which receives the digital signal. Once an external antenna has been fitted to your car, the small DAB box sits on your dashboard and sends the digital signal to your old analogue radio.

However, beware. It is important that you buy a good quality ariel that is able to receive the digital signal anywhere. Choose an inferior ariel and your reception could be interrupted. Don’t be tempted to skimp on the ariel, or the DAB unit won’t produce the best results.
